필자는 가진 재화(돈)를 통 크게 보시(布施)하다가 세상을 떠나간 전옥숙 여사(1929-2015)에 관한 글을 쓴바 있다. 그녀는 은세계영화제작소의 사장이었다. 그런데 이 글을 쓴 다음에, 대한민국 남성 가운데 통 크게 재화를 기부하다가 세상을 떠난, 채현국(1935-2021) 전 효암학원 이사장이 떠올려 졌다.

채현국 선생의 정치·경제·사회·문화·예술·일반 분야의 인재들 1,000여 명에게 큰돈을 주었다고 한다. 집을 사준 사람도 여러 명 있다. 민주화 운동을 하다가 고통 당했던 이들, 공익을 위해 활동한 이들에게 그 많은 돈들이 흘러들어갔다.
도서출판 '피플 파워'가 출판한 “건달 할배 채현국과 친구들”이란 도서에 의하면, 그는 많은 사람들에게 돈을 쾌척한 큰손의 '인간 천사'였다. 필자는 인사동 토박이인 노광래 갤러리 관장을 잘 알고 있는데, 노광래 관장이 채현국 선생을 오랜 기간을 수행했다. 그가 기획, 채현국 선생 관련 단행본이 출간되기도 했다.
채현국 선생, 그의 일생을 요약한 글에 따르면 “일제 강점기인 1935년 대구에서 태어난 채현국 선생은 1960년 서울대 철학과를 졸업했다. 이듬해 <중앙방송>(현 한국방송) 연출로 입사했다. 하지만 5.16군사쿠데타 세력이 방송을 군사정권의 선전도구로 써먹으려고 하자 석 달 만에 그만뒀다”고 한다. 그의 아버지는 탄광업을 하던 사업가였다.
“채현국 선생은 아버지가 운영하던 부도 직전의 탄광(흥국탄광)으로 내려갔다. 강원도 삼척군 도계의 흥국탄광을 일으켜 손꼽히는 광산업체로 키웠다. 한때 조선·화학·해운 등 24개 기업을 운영하며 소득세 납부액이 전국 2위에 오를 정도로 거부가 됐다”고 한다.
그의 인생은 이때부터 다른 궤도로 흘러가기 시작했다. 이에 대해 “1972년 박정희 대통령이 10월 유신으로 장기독재를 시작하자 정권의 앞잡이가 되어 유착하지 않으려면 사업을 접는 수밖에 없었다. 그리고 그는 이듬해에 미련 없이 모든 재산을 처분해 동업하던 친구들과 광부들에게 나눠 줬다”고 한다. 여기서부터 그는 가진 돈을 나눠주는 통 큰 기부를 시작했다.
어느 분은 채현국 선생에 대해 쓴 글에서 “자기 몫으로 남은 재산은 독재에 저항하는 이들의 뒷배가 되어 <창작과 비평>사의 운영을 도왔다. 쪽방에 사는 해직기자들에게 집을 사주었다. 핍박받는 운동권 학생들과 가난한 사상가들을 지원하고, 검경에 쫒기는 이들을 숨도록 도왔다”고 기록했다.
도서출판 피플 파워는 채현국을 소개하는 글에서 “채현국 선생의 어떤 일갈이나 한 마디 명언 때문에 젊은이들이 뜨거운 호응을 보낸 것은 아니었다. 한 걸음 더 들어가 보게 만드는 매력을 지닌 선생은 세상과 인생에 대한 통찰을 바탕으로 말과 생각과 행동을 하나로 꿰며 일치시켜온 삶을 살고 있었다. 그 많은 젊은이들이 아무 망설임 없이 ‘시대의 어른’이라는 헌사를 선생께 올렸던 까닭”이라고 피력했다.
이어 “채현국 선생은 엄청난 재산을 모았지만 미련 없이 기부했다. 자신을 위해서는 손톱만큼도 쓰지 않고 사회를 위해 일하다가 핍박받는 당대 젊은이들을 위해 물 쓰듯, 자기 재산을 썼다. 그것도 남몰래. 정치·경제·사회·문화·예술·일반 분야에서 민주화 등 공익을 위해 활동한 이들 가운데 적어도 1,000명 이상이 선생의 도움을 받았다. 스스로 무소유(無所有)의 화신이 되어, 그물에 걸리지 않는 바람처럼 가지에 매이지 않은 구름처럼 살았다. 장삼이사들 틈에 끼여 표 나지 않게 살면서, 그 장삼이사들의 삶과 정과 놀이에서 달콤한 행복을 느꼈다”고 소개했다.
그는 지난 1988에 제4대 효암학원 이사장(효암 고등학교-개운중학교)으로 취임했다. 이 학교를 졸업한 한 한생은 “그 분은 늘 나무를 심고, 휴지를 주웠다. 그래서 학교를 졸업할 때까지도 그분이 학교의 청소부인 줄 알았다”고 말할 정도였다.

채현국 선생은 생전에 “돈하고 권력이 대단히 닮아 있는데, 이것들은 암만 많아도 물리지를 않는다. 많으면 많을수록 더 매력이 있고 더 마력이 생긴다”고 말했다.
또는 “출세하라는 말은 남을 다 찍어 누르고 '너 다 가져라' 소리거든, 권력이나 돈이나 똑같지. 출세를 해봤자 남의 앞잡이”라는 말도 남겼다.
그런가하면 “민중이여, 정치인들을 믿지 말아라, 스스로 살길을 찾는 수밖에 없다”라고, 충고했다.
채현국 선생은 거부(巨富) 중의 한 사람이었다. 그런데 그 많은 돈을, 돈이 절실하게 필요한 이들에게 골고루 나눠줬다. 지니고 있던 재화를 몽땅 세상 사람들에게 나눠줬다. 이런 분이 다시금 윤회(輪廻), 더 많은 돈을, 세상 사람들에게 쾌척(快擲)하기를 기도한다. moonilsuk@naver.com
