일제 강점기에서 해방되기 무섭게 동족상잔의 한국전쟁이 발발한다. 비탄의 가장 깊은 골짝을 건너야 했던 참혹함 그 자체였다. 3년간 어어진 전쟁은 휴전됐으나, 거기 분단의 사슬이 채워졌다. 아울러 견디기 어려운 굶주림과 파괴된 잔해가 깊게 배회했다. 대한민국은 그 폐허 위에서 피땀어린 헌신적 노력으로 오늘의 기적을 일구었다.
부존자원이 턱없이 부족한 우리 입장에서는 사람만이 자원이었다. 그래서 교육에 온전히 정성을 쏟았다. 부모 세대의 희생 위에서 가능한 일이었다. 자신들은 헐벗고 굶주리면서도 자식들은 학교에 보내는 것을 최고의 미덕으로 여겼다. 아울러 두레정신과 공동체 의식 속에 깃든 우리 민족 특유의 근면 성실함도 빼놓을 수 없다.
이제 명실공히 선진국 반열에 올랐다. 경제력 측면에서 다른 나라를 지원하는 등 책임을 다한다. K팝, K드라마 등 문화적 영향력 또한 세계 속에 뿌리내리고 있다. 과학기술도 선진 강국과 자웅을 겨루게 됐다. 자주국방을 향한 끈질긴 도전 역시 결실을 맺고 있다. 아울러 그에 기반한 무기 수출 국가로 발돋움했다.
무엇이 대한민국을 끌어올리는 원천이 되었을까? 다시는 외세에 휘둘리지 않겠다는 한국인 모두의 뼈에 새긴 맹세였던 것이다. 거기 또 누가 우리를 시험하려 드는가? 미국·중국 공히 더는 오만하지 말라. 존중이 없는 자리엔 파멸이 다가설 뿐이다. 우리가 한 쪽 팔을 내어줄 때, 당신들의 다리 한 쪽도 온전할 수 없음을 명심하라.
대한민국은 결코 패권을 추구하지 않는다. 오직 우리는 우리의 길에 충실할 따름이다. 그것은 우리가 더 잘하려는 의지일 뿐, 타국을 해치려는데 있지 않다. 확언커니와 그것은 끊임없는 혁신과 도전을 통해 우리를 온전히 지키려는 굳센 의지의 집약이다. 어느 한순간도 자만할 수 없는 역사로부터 체득된 유전자인 것이다.

As soon as liberation from Japanese colonial rule arrived, the fratricidal Korean War broke out. It was a brutality that forced us to traverse the deepest chasm of sorrow. The three-year war ended with an armistice, but the chains of division were firmly in place. Furthermore, unbearable hunger and the devastation of destruction lingered deep. From those ruins, the Republic of Korea built the miracle it has today through dedicated, sweat-and-tear efforts.
For us, who were severely lacking in natural resources, our people were our only resource. Therefore, we devoted our utmost devotion to education. This was possible thanks to the sacrifices of our parents' generation. Even while we ourselves were destitute and starving, we considered sending our children to school the highest virtue. Furthermore, we cannot overlook the diligence and sincerity inherent in our people, rooted in the spirit of Dure and community.
Now, we have truly achieved the ranks of advanced nations. We are fulfilling our responsibilities, including supporting other countries in terms of economic power. Cultural influences like K-pop and K-dramas are also taking root globally. Science and technology are also competing with advanced powers. The persistent pursuit of self-reliant national defense is bearing fruit. Furthermore, based on this, the Republic of Korea has emerged as a weapons exporter.
What has become the source of South Korea's rise? It was the pledge etched into the bones of all Koreans never to be swayed by foreign powers again. And who else would test us? Both the US and China, stop being arrogant. Where there is no respect, destruction only approaches. Remember that when we surrender one arm, not even one of your legs will remain intact.
South Korea never seeks hegemony. We are simply faithful to our own path. This is our will to do better, not to harm others. This assurance is the culmination of a firm resolve to protect ourselves through constant innovation and challenge. It is a genetic trait ingrained in our history that prevents us from ever becoming complacent.
