유네스코 세계기록유산인 승정원일기는 총 2,395권 가운데 957권(40%)이 번역 완료되었으나, 이 중 상당수가 아직 간행되지 못하고 있다. 이미 번역이 완료됐음에도 출간되지 못한 원고만 무려 265권에 달하며 매년 출간 실적도 목표치에 크게 미달하고 있다.

한국고전번역원은 최근 4년간 매년 61권을 번역 목표로 설정하고 이를 꾸준히 달성해 온 것으로 확인되었다. 반면 후속 절차인 출판 및 DB 구축은 현저히 부진한 것으로 나타났다.

한편, 국민의 관심은 빠르게 높아지고 있다. 한국고전번역원이 운영하는 한국고전종합DB 이용자는 최근 3년 사이 약 68% 증가했으며, 2021년 240만 명에서 2024년에는 400만 명을 넘어섰다. 국민적 수요가 급격히 늘고 있음에도, 기관의 사업 관리 역량과 간행 체계는 여전히 과거 수준에 머물러 있는 것으로 나타났다.
