필자는 고등학교 때 농업(실업)고등학교를 졸업했다. 공부 과목이 대부분 농학(農學) 부분이언다. 생물(生物) 과목 있었다. 나는 생물과목을 좋아했다. 생물과목이란, 살아 있는 것에 대한 학문이다. 그래서 나에게는 살아 있는 것들을 유심히 관찰하는 버릇이 있다. 나이가 들어서도, 어릴 때의 그런 버릇이 없어지질 않는다.

필자는 지난 10월12일 아침, 방 안의 코너 천정에서 거미를 발견했다. 좌우로 발 8개가 달린 거미는 아름다운 자태였다. 이 거미를 관찰한 결과, 아래와 같은 특성 10가지를 발견해냈다. 공개한다.
1.거미는 먼저 거미줄을 친다. 거미는 어떤 일이 있어도 먼저 투자한다. 먼저 거미줄을 치는 것은, 자신에 대한 선 투자이다.
2.거미줄은 나근나근하다. 탄력이 있다. 먹이가 걸려들면 일단은 출렁출렁 한다. 그래서 거미는 거미줄에 걸려든 파리 등의 벌레들이 죽기 전에 즐겁게 죽음을 맞이하도록 배려(?)한다.
3.거미는 먹이 감이 걸려들면 저항하지 못하도록, 자신의 몸속에 들어있는 독(毒)을 주입, 실신시킨다.
4.거미는 먹이 감이 잘 걸려들 장소가 어디인지, 고급 정보를 미리 알고 있다. 생존을 위해 꼭 필요한 고급 정보의 수집에 능(能)하다.
5.먹이 감이 한 번 거미줄에 걸려들면 탈출을 못한다. 끈적끈적한 용액이 먹이 감의 몸을 둘러싸 움직이지 못하도록 옭아맨다. 포획된 벌레가 움직일수록 더 조여진다. 걸려 든 먹이 감이 스스로 죽음을 자초토록 한다.
6.거미는 거미줄에 걸려든 먹이 감을 포획, 기미 줄에 걸어 두고 조금씩 갉아 먹는다. 먹이의 보관 방법이 아주 발달해 있다.
7.거미는 제 실구멍에서 빠져 나오는 끈끈한 실에 몸을 매달고 좌우-상하로 움직이며 입체의 집(거미줄 집)을 짓는 입체 건축의 기술을 지녔다.
9.거미는 아름다운 몸을 지녔다. 그리하여 하루하루 아름다움을 뽐내며, 제 멋에 취해 살아간다.
10. 거미는 확실하게 자기의 영토(領土)를 만들고, 그 영토를 철통같이 장악할 줄 아는, 권세가(權勢家)이다.

이상, 거미의 특성 10가지는 필자가 거미줄을 유심히 관찰한 이후에 작성해본 것들이다.

10 Secrets to Success from Spiders
[Essay-based Approach] Spiders Spin Their Webs First, Spiders Invest First, No Matter What!

I graduated from an agricultural (vocational) high school. Most of my subjects were agricultural studies, including biology. I loved biology. Biology is the study of living things. Therefore, I have a habit of carefully observing living things. Even as I grow older, this habit from my childhood has not faded.
On the morning of October 12th, I found a spider on the ceiling in a corner of my room. With eight legs on each side, it was a beautiful sight. Observing this spider, I discovered the following ten characteristics. I'd like to share them with you.
1. Spiders spin their webs first. Spiders invest first, no matter what. Spinning their webs first is a preemptive investment in themselves.
2. Spider webs are flexible and elastic. When prey is ensnared, they initially sway. Thus, spiders ensure that flies and other insects caught in their webs die happily before they die.
3. When prey is ensnared, spiders inject their venom, stunning them with its own venom to prevent them from resisting.
4. Spiders know where their prey are most likely to be ensnared, possessing advanced information. They are adept at gathering this essential information for survival.
5. Once prey is ensnared in the web, they cannot escape. A sticky solution envelops the prey, ensnaring them and preventing their movement. The more the captured insect moves, the tighter the web becomes. This trap causes the ensnared prey to bring about their own death. 6. Spiders capture prey caught in their webs, hang them on a string, and nibble them, eating them little by little. Their prey storage methods are highly developed.
7. Spiders possess the skill of three-dimensional construction, suspending themselves on sticky threads that emerge from their pores and moving left and right, up and down, to build a three-dimensional home (the web).
9. Spiders possess beautiful bodies. Thus, they live each day displaying their beauty, intoxicated by their own style.
10. Spiders are powerful beings who firmly establish their territory and maintain it with ironclad control.
These ten characteristics of spiders are what I wrote after carefully observing spider webs. As a journalist and writer, I like the fourth of the ten characteristics of spiders (content: Spiders know where their prey will most likely be caught, and they have advanced knowledge. They are adept at gathering essential information for survival).
