최예림 작가. 대한민국 1위 전시 전문 도슨트. 일명 ‘줄 서는 전시’라 불리는 화제의 현장엔 항상 그녀가 있다.

국내 유명 전시회의 섭외 1순위로 국립중앙박물관, 예술의전당 등 국내 주요 미술관에서 10년 넘게 가장 주목받는 전시를 안내해왔다.”  명랑하고 쾌활한 목소리로 유명 전시를 깊이 있는 해설과 우아한 무드로 설명해주는 여자 최예림 도슨트를 지칭하는 문장이다.

그녀는 순수 미술을 전공하고 정재계 유명 인사는 물론 기업 VIP도슨트로 활약하며, 방송·강연·유튜브 등을 통해 미술계의 아트 인플루언서로도 유명하다. 그런 그녀가 며칠 전 아주 흥미있는 책을 펴냈다. 최예림 작가가 “미술관에서 안아주는 남자(더블북 출판사)”를 출간한 것. 

제목도 다소 도발적으로 “이다.  우리의 마음을 안아주는 따스한 미술들 나를 안아주는 화가 아홉 명을 지금 그녀는 끌어안고 있다. 그 이름만 들어도 그림들이 모두 떠오르는 유명한 작가들이다. 그 어떤 예술가도 몰랐던 아름다움을 발견하게 해주는 남자, 오귀스트 르누아르. 흔들림 없는 신념으로 입체파의 길을 밝혀준 남자 폴 세잔. 어둠 속에서도 별빛 같은 희망을 건 낸 가장 비극적인 37살에 별이 된 남자, 빈센트 반 고흐. 타이티란 낯선 세계로 원시성을 이끌어주는 남자, 폴 고갱. 황금빛으로 세상의 모든 여성을 영원히 빛나게 한 남자, 구스타프 클림트. 일상을 바다의 축제로 물들인 블루맨, 라울 뒤피. 매력을 넘어 마력을 천재처럼 펼쳐 보인 괴짜 남자, 살바도르 달리. 세상의 고독을 함께 짊어져주는 의리의 남자 베르나르 뷔페. 수련 하나로 전 세계 사람들을 정원에 빠지게 한 남자, 끌로드 모네. 이렇게 르누아르에서 클림트까지, 명화로 읽는 위로의 미술이 작품에는 아홉 명의 ‘미술관의 남자들’이 등장한다. 

그들은 붓으로 삶을 기록했고, 사랑과 고통을 작품 속에 남겼으며, 그 그림들은 오늘 우리를 안아주는 튼튼하고 멋진 남자로서 그녀에게는 두 팔이 된다. 그녀는 매우 프로페셔널하다. 도슨트는 오디오 기계가 아닌 사람이기 때문에, 매주 업데이트되는 전시장 소식들과 감정을 전할 수 있는 소통 능력과 유연성도 잘 알고 있다.

”인기 전시의 경우 수백 명의 인원을 통제하고 끌고 가야 하므로 어느 정도의 카리스마도 필요하다. 또, 호감을 줄 수 있는 단정한 언어 사용과 비언어적 태도도 중요하다. 도슨트는 그림 설명만 하는 것이 아니라 대중 앞에 서는 일이기 때문에 필요한 요건들은 다 나열할 수 없을 정도로 많다. 이런 부수적인 것 외에 가장 중요한 것은 관람객으로 하여금 그림을 보게 하는 일이다. 절대 목적을 잃어서는 안 된다“고 고백하고 있다.

『미술관에서 안아주는 남자』를 읽은 배우 유준상은 “미술관에서 만난 도슨트 최예림은 나에게 화가들의 시선을 마주하게 해준다. 그녀의 책을 보고 싶다”고 말했고,  나는 “최예림 도슨트의 스토리텔링을 들으면 거장이기 전에 한 남자로서 더 화가들이 가진 탁월하고 빛나는 모습을 문득 문득 발견하게 된다”고 이것이 도슨트 최예림의 빠질 수밖에 없는 치명적인 매력이다. 

나는 나도 미술 전문가이지만 그녀의 쏙쏙 들어오는 해설을 들으면 그녀는 타고난 전시의 명해설가, 여자 도슨트 정우철이란 생각이 든다. 마치 미술평론가보다 더 잘 그림을 설명하는 마녀 같다. “내가 생각했던 예술은 이게 아니야!”라고 하면서, 더 많은 관람객과 소통하고 전시해설에 집중할 수 있는 도슨트라는 직업을 선택하게 됐다는 그녀. 이 책을 보면 그녀의 모든 꿈을 이루기 위해 실제 외국의 미술관으로 비행기를 타고 그림을 보러 가는  모습이 떠오른다.

이제 나는 한국·프랑스 수교 140주년 기념으로 예술의전당에서 2026년 1월 25일까지 열리는 〈오랑주리-오르세 미술관 특별전 : 세잔, 르누아르〉 특별 도슨트 그녀의 목소리를 듣기위해 외출해야 한다. 근데, 단 하나 걱정은 세계적으로 유명한 작가들을 전시가 올 때 마다 안아주는 이 아름다운 여자를 그녀의 남친이 질투하거나 싫어하지 않을까 걱정된다.

[New Book Review] Author Yerim Choi Publishes "The Man Who Hugs You at the Museum"

She's the top choice for bookings at prestigious domestic exhibitions, and has guided the most notable exhibitions at major Korean museums, including the National Museum of Korea and the Seoul Arts Center, for over a decade." This phrase describes docent Yerim Choi, who, with her cheerful and cheerful voice, offers in-depth commentary and elegant explanations of renowned exhibitions. She majored in fine arts and works as a docent for prominent figures in politics and business, as well as corporate VIPs. She's also a renowned art influencer in the art world through broadcasts, lectures, and YouTube. A few days ago, she published a fascinating book: "The Man Who Hugs You at the Museum" (Double Book Publishing).

The title itself is somewhat provocative. She is currently embracing nine painters who embrace her, warm art that embraces our hearts. Just hearing their names brings to mind paintings of famous artists. Auguste Renoir, the man who helped us discover a beauty no other artist had known. Paul Cézanne, the man who illuminated the path of Cubism with his unwavering conviction. Vincent van Gogh, the man who became a star at the tragic age of 37, offering starlight-like hope even in the darkness. Paul Gauguin, the man who led the primitive to the unfamiliar world of Tahiti. Gustav Klimt, the man who forever illuminated all the women of the world with golden light. Raoul Dufy, the Blue Man who colored everyday life with a festival of the sea. Salvador Dali, the eccentric man who displayed magic beyond charm like a genius. Bernard Buffet, the man of loyalty who shared the loneliness of the world. Claude Monet, the man who captivated people around the world with his water lilies. From Renoir to Klimt, the comforting art read through masterpieces. The work features nine "men of the museum."

They recorded their lives with a brush, imbuing their works with love and pain. These paintings, today, embrace us as strong, handsome men, like her two arms. She is a true professional. As a docent, not a sound machine, she understands the weekly updates on the exhibition hall, as well as the communication skills and flexibility to convey her emotions.

"Popular exhibitions require a certain degree of charisma, requiring the management and leadership of hundreds of people. Furthermore, a well-mannered and engaging language and nonverbal demeanor are crucial. A docent's role is not simply to explain paintings; it's to stand in front of the public, so the requirements are too numerous to list. Beyond these secondary aspects, the most important thing is to get the audience to see the paintings. Never lose sight of your purpose."

Actor Yoo Jun-sang, who read "The Man Who Embraces You at the Museum," confessed, "Choi Ye-rim, the docent I met at the museum, helped me see the painters' perspectives. I said, "I want to read her book," and I said, "Listening to Docent Choi Ye-rim's storytelling, I suddenly discover the brilliance and brilliance of artists, not just as masters, but as men." This is the irresistible charm of Docent Choi Ye-rim.

I'm an art expert myself, but listening to her articulate commentary, I think she's a natural-born exhibition interpreter, a female docent, Jeong Woo-cheol. She's like a witch who explains paintings better than art critics. She says she chose the docent profession because it allows her to connect with a wider audience and focus on exhibition interpretation, saying, "This isn't the art I imagined!" Reading this book, I picture her actually flying to foreign museums to see paintings to fulfill her dreams.

Now, I have to go out to hear her voice, the special docent for the "Orangerie - Musée d'Orsay Special Exhibition: Cézanne, Renoir," which runs until January 25, 2026, at the Seoul Arts Center to commemorate the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France. But my only worry is that her boyfriend might be jealous or resentful of this beautiful woman who embraces world-renowned artists every time they have an exhibition.
