이준석 전 국민의힘 대표가 오는 12월 하순 무렵으로 가출을 예고한 가운데 신당을 꾸릴 것으로 알려진다. 최근 그는 김기현 대표 체제가 조만간 무너지고 한동훈 장관 또는 원희룡 장관이  비대위원장으로 나설 것이라고 예언하기도 했다.

우선 뜬금없게 들린다. 또한 이런 정도의 낮은 인식 체계라면 펼쳐둔 평론가 돗자리도 속히 걷어야 할 듯싶다. 물론 김기현 대표가 어젠다 세팅에서 미흡하다는 지적은 있다. 내년 4월 총선을 진두지휘하기엔 대중적 인지도가 다소 떨어진다는 평가도 따른다. 

아울러 기존 국민의힘 안팎에 깔린 구태와 안이한 현실 인식을 말끔히 걷어낼 혁신을 단행하지 못한 점도 있다. 또한 윤 대통령에게 민심을 적극 전달하고 물밑 조율에 나서야 했는데, 그런 측면에서 매우 아쉽게 느껴지는 게 사실이다. 비판받을 일이다.

하지만 당원들 투표에 의해 선출된 대표를 손쉽게 물러나게 하는 것은 그리 좋은 모양새가 아니다. 특히 별다른 실책없이 당을 이끌고 있는 상황에서 무리수를 두게 되면 국민적 반감을 부를 수 있다. 총선 환경 조성에 있어서 결코 바람직한 방안이 아니다.

선거가 가까워지면서 국민의힘 일각에서 비대위 전환을 거론하는 경우가 있다. 김 대표 체제로는 역부족이라는 의문 때문인 듯싶다. 그러나 보다 본질적인 문제는 윤석열 정부 들어서며, 호가호위 일삼던 부류와 쌓인 구태를 걷어내는 일이다.

그간 논란을 야기했던 국정운영 기조 전환에 있어서는 윤 대통령도 바뀐 기색이 역력하다. 내각을 향해 국민 눈높이에 맞춰야 할 것을 주문하기도 했다. 그럼에도 민심 흐름이 대폭 반영된 대국민 메시지와 친서민적 행보에 더욱 치중할 필요가 있다. 

총선에 나설 인재 영입 중요성도 대두된다. 수구적 관점에서 탈피해 역량 위주로 폭넓게 살펴야 한다. 친분 본위에 머물게 되면 총선은 필망으로 귀결될 수 있다. 이를 잘 지켜 준행하면 이준석 신당이 변수로 작동될 여지는 사실상 사라진다. 

김기현 대표가 냉철히 판단하고 실천해야 할 덕목이라 여긴다. 그와 함께 한동훈, 원희룡 장관 등은 선대위에서 주도적 역할을 수행할 수 있도록 공간을 제공하는 것이 훨씬 유익할 듯싶다. 그 시기와 방법론에 대한 복안도 마련됐어야 할 시점이다.

If we remain focused on friendship, a general election may become inevitable. If this is carefully observed and followed, there will virtually be no room for Lee Jun-seok's new party to act as a variable.

CEO Kim Ki-hyun believes that this is a virtue that must be judged calmly and put into practice. At the same time, it would be much more beneficial to provide space for Ministers Han Dong-hoon and Won Hee-ryong to play a leading role in the campaign committee. It is time to prepare a plan for the timing and methodology.
