대통령실이 20일(현지시간) 윤석열 대통령의 영국 국빈 방문 관련해 "윤 대통령의 영국 국빈 방문은 1883년 처음 수호통상조약을 맺은 이후 깊은 협력·연대 역사를 보여준 두 나라 관계에 또 다른 100년 도약을 기약하게 할 것"이라고 강조했다.
김은혜 홍보수석은 이날 런던 현지 브리핑에서 "영국과 굳건한 과학기술연대를 기반으로 공급망·무역협력 기반을 공고히 다지며 새로운 비즈니스 기회를 창출할 것"이라며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "한·영 관계는 협력 잠재력이 큼에도 현실은 이에 미치지 못했다"며 "영국의 유럽 내 우리나라와의 교역 규모는 5위 수준에 머물러 있었다"고 말했다.
또 "이번 순방을 계기로 이루어지는 한·영 FTA 개선 협상 개시는 한국과 영국에 자유로운 교역·투자환경을 조성해 양국 기업들에 새로운 부를 창출하는 계기가 될 것"이라고 전했다.
이어 "양국 관계를 글로벌 전략적 동반자 관계로 격상시킨 DSA(Downing Street Accord) 일명 '다우닝 합의'는 양국이 체결할 수 있는 최고 수준 협력 문서로 타결을 이뤘다"고 강조했다.
더불어 '다우닝 합의'에 "안보·국방·과학기술·공급망 확보·에너지연대 등 경제 분야까지 협력 지평을 포괄적으로 넒힌 방안"이라며 "세계 1위 반도체 설계기업 그리고 세계적 기초과학 역량을 보유한 영국과 맺게 될 첨단기술협력은 양국 번영 토대임과 동시에 대한민국 기업들이 마음껏 뛸 수 있는 운동장을 넓히는 데에 큰 도움이 될 것"이라고 전했다.
김 수석은 윤 대통령 국빈 방문이 시작된 이날 현지 상황에 대해 "버킹엄궁에서 넬슨제독 동상이 있는 트래펄가 광장까지 뻗은 일직선 도로엔 대한민국 태극기와 영국 국기 유니언잭이 나란히 걸려있었다"고 전했다.
