브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 윤석열 정부에서 '스타 장관'으로 통하는 원희룡 국토교통부 장관의 내년 총선 출마설이 유력해지고 있다.

21일 정치권에 따르면 원희룡 장관은 총선 출마를 위해 조만간 장관직을 사임할 것이라는 이야기가 기정사실화되고 있다.

이에 따라 원 장관이 어느 지역에서 출마할지를 놓고 이목이 집중되고 있다.

국민의힘 당내에선 3선 의원 출신의 원 장관이 현 정부 하에서도 주목을 받은 만큼, 수도권 험지 출마를 요청하는 분위기가 감지되고 있다.

특히 이재명 더불어민주당 대표의 지역구인 '인천 계양을'에 출마한다면, 승패를 떠나 당을 위해선 더없이 좋을 것이란 분위기다.

장예찬 국민의힘 청년최고위원도 전날 '뉴스A 라이브'와의 인터뷰에서 "원희룡 장관처럼 중량감 있고 인지도 있는 인사가 (험지 출마에) 선뜻 나서겠다고 하면 당 입장에서는 너무 고마운 일"이라며 "계양을 지역이 김포공항과의 연계 문제든 교통 관련된 이슈가 상당히 많은 지역인 교통이나 부동산 문제에 전문 역량을 갖춘 국토부 장관 출신의 출마를 반길 수 있다"고 기대감을 드러냈다.

인천 계양을의 경우, 이재명 대표 이전에 송영길 전 대표가 무려 5번이나 국회에 입성한 민주당 전통적 텃밭 지역이다. 이 곳에 원 장관이 이재명 대표의 대항마로 나선다는 것 자체가 선당후사하는 가장 좋은 사례가 된다는 논리다.

또한 원희룡 장관은 대권 잠룡으로까지 분류되는 만큼, 총선 험지 출마는 승패 여부를 떠나 향후 대권 행보에도 도움이 될 것이란 관측도 나온다.

다만 그 반대의견도 만만치 않다. 당의 소중한 인력 자산을 험지에 출마시키는 것이 과연 옳은 일이냐는 것이다. 

한편, 원 장관 측 의견을 들어보면 아직은 고심 중인 단계로 전해졌다. 당에선 가용 전력을 최대한 총선에 투입한다는 기조 아래 원 장관의 출마를 촉구하고 있는 상황이다. 원 장관 역시 이를 받아들여 수도권 험지 출마까지도 가능성을 모두 열어놓고 고심하고 있다는 전언이다.
