▲ 양산 통도사 천왕문, 도 문화재에서 보물 승격

[브레이크뉴스=이성용 기자] 경상남도는 문화재청에 신청한 ‘양산 통도사 천왕문’이 보물로 지정됐다고 2일 밝혔다.

천왕문은 사천왕상을 봉안해 가람을 수호하고 사찰에 출입하는 사람들로 해금 모든 악귀가 물러난 청정도량으로 인식하게끔 하려는 뜻에서 세워진 건물이다.

양산 통도사 천왕문은 1713년에 화재로 소실된 것을 그 다음해인 1714년에 중건했다는 기록과 천왕문 내부에 봉안된 사천왕상이 1718년에 제작됐다는 묵서가 확인되어 건립시기를 명확하게 규명할 수 있는 사찰 산문 중 보기 드문 사례로 역사적, 학술적 가치가 높다.

특히 기둥 위 공포인 익공살미는 익공이 주심포나 다포가 점차 간략화되는 변천과정을 알 수 있는 시대별 특성 연구에 중요한 자료로 평가 받고 있다.

경남도에서는 양산 통도사 천왕문은 1985년부터 도 유형문화재로 지정해 보존·관리하다 문화재적 가치가 뛰어나다고 판단해서 2023년 6월에 관계 전문가들과 보물 승격의 타당성을 확인했으며 이후 2023년 7월에 경남도 건축문화재 위원회 개최해 만장일치로 심의 가결해 문화재청에 보물 승격을 요청했다.

이정곤 경상남도 문화체육국장은 “경남도 문화유산이 보물로 승격지정 된 것은 지역의 우수한 문화유산 가치를 인정받은 매우 뜻깊은 일로 지역 문화유산의 우수성을 널리 알리기 위해 적극 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
