 삼별초의 개경 기습조가 제주도에서 쪽배 4척을 나눠 타고 북쪽 머나먼 벽란도를 향해 출항한 날이 1272년 4월 15일이었다.

   이들이 보길도를 지날 즈음 비바람이 거세지더니 풍랑이 창공을 덮었다. 그럼에도 거침없이 바다를 곡예하듯 헤쳐 나가던 중에 거친 풍랑에 표류하던 배 한척을 보았다. 개경수군이었다.

  꽤 큰 배임에도 중심을 못 잡고 해풍에 밀려가고 있었다. 그보다 훨씩 작은 배에 탄 살별초병사들이 갈고리를 던져 그 배를 나포해 추자로도 끌고 갔다.

   개경 수군의 배에서 원종이 삼별초를 회유하려고 보낸 각문부사 금훈과 수행원 20명이 우르르 내려와 삼별초 기습조 앞에 무릎을 끌었다. 이들중 금훈과 달래는 오래전 일면식이 있었다.

   달래가 김통정을 구하러 간 개경에서 잠시 비구니 노릇을 하며 원종에게 설법할 때 궁을 지키던 금군이었던 것이다.  금훈의 품속에서 원 세조가 삼별초를 달래려고 보내는 편지가 나왔다. 

   삼별초가 항쟁을 포기하면 자유민으로 살게 해주고, 일본 정벌에 공을 세우면 벼슬까지 주겠다는 파격적인 내용이었다. 

   “어떻게 네가 세조의 것을 가지고 왔느냐 ?”

달래가 매섭게 다그치자 금훈은 원종이 원 세조에게 특별히 부탁해서 받은 편지라고 했다. 원종은 자신의 명이라면 삼별초가 무시하겠지만, 한때 삼별초와 타협했던 원 세조가 직접 나선다면 무시하지 못하리라 본 것이다.

  달래는 금훈 일행을 추자도에 가둔 뒤 원 세조의 편지를 제주의 김통정에게 전달했다. 김통정이 편지를 읽더니 그 자리에서 찢어버렸다.

   “원나라 황제를 어찌 믿어? 지난번 진도에서도 우리를 안심시켜놓고 뒤통수쳤다. 한번 속지 두번 속겠나. 그놈들 한 짓을 보면 모두 죽여야겠지만, 우리 뜻을 알려야 하니 한 놈은 살려 보내서 고려왕에게 이렇게 전하도록 하라. 삼별초는 개경 정부가 원나라를 편들어 백성들을 핍박하는 한 결코 화해할 수 없노라고.” 

   그래서 달래는 금훈만 작은 배에 태워 늙은 뱃사공 한 명을 딸려 보냈다. 그 배가 바다에서 20일을 헤매다가 가까스로 벽락도에 도착했다. 

   그 다음날 금훈이 원종을 만나 깜짝 놀랄만한 소식을 전했다.

   “전하, 아뢰옵기 황송하오나 달래 일행이 폭풍우를 무릅쓰고 상경하는 것으로 보아 전하를 직접 노리는 듯합니다.”

   “달래가 누구더라?”

   “김통정을 구출해 간 승려 혜성입니다.”

  “아, 이런 고얀것들!....... 그나저나 큰일 났구나.”

원종은 낯빛이 하얘져 긴급히 어전 회의를 소집했다. 

   “도성에 계엄령을 선포한다. 벽란도 등 개경으로 오는 길목의 검문을 강화하고, 궁궐 경계에 만전을 기하라.”

그러더니 금훈에게 표문을 주어 원나라 세조에게 보냈다.

  ‘황제 폐하께서 개과천선의 기회를 주는데도 적들은 무시하고 있습니다. 상국의 군대를 보내어 무뢰배를 소탕해주십시오.’ 

  세조도 자신을 무시한 삼별초가 괘씸했다. 하지만 진도를 정복하기까지 여러번 낭패를 본 일도 있고 해서 선뜻 나서기 꺼려졌다. 살별초와 싸우기 전에 일본 정벌부터 마무리하고 싶었다.

  세조의 의중을 잘 아는 홍다구가 고려의 처지를 더 곤혹스럽게 했다.

    “원나라가 삼별초를 진도보다 더 먼 제주로 쫓아냈습니다. 그러면 나머지 잔당 정도야 고려가 처리해야지 또 상국에게 짐을 넘기려 하니 한심합니다. 이제는 고려가 먼저 삼별초 잔당을 처리한 후에 상국의 뜻에 따라 일본 정벌에 열중해야 합니다.”

  세조는 홍다구의 건의를 받아들여 고려에 삼별초를 정벌하라고 압박을 가했다.

  그러나 개경 정부의 힘만으로 삼별초를 정벌하기란 결코 쉽지 않았다. 오히려 삼별초의 수군에게 고려수군이 눌리면서 더욱 위축되고 있었다. 속이 새까맣게 탄 원종은 벽란도 등 왕궁 주변의 수비만 대폭 강화하는 수밖에 없었다. dyl1010@hanmail.net

Kim Tong-jeong tears up the handwriting of King Sejo of the Yuan Dynasty.

 It was April 15, 1272, when the Gaegyeong raiding team of Sambyeolcho sailed from Jeju Island in four small boats for the far northern Byeokran Island.

 By the time they passed Bogil Island, the rain and wind had become stronger, and storms covered the sky. Nevertheless, while I was moving through the sea like acrobats without hesitation, I saw a ship drifting in a rough storm. It was Gaegyeongsu-gun.

 Although she was a fairly large ship, she was unable to maintain her balance and was being pushed by the sea breeze. Salbyeolcho soldiers on a much smaller boat threw hooks to capture the boat and took it to Chuja.

 From the Gaegyeong naval force's ship, Gakmunbusa Geumhun and 20 attendants, whom King Wonjong had sent to appease Sambyeolcho, came down and knelt in front of the Sambyeolcho attack team. Among them, Geum-hoon and Dal-lae met each other a long time ago.

 In Gaegyeong, where Dal-rae went to rescue Kim Tong-jeong, he served as a nun for a while and was a Geumgun who guarded the palace when she preached to King Wonjong. In Geumhun's arms, a letter came from King Sejo of Yuan to appease Sambyeolcho.

 It was an unconventional plan: if Sambyeolcho gave up the struggle, they would be allowed to live as free people, and if they contributed to the conquest of Japan, they would even be given government positions.

 “How did you bring King Sejo’s things?”

When Dal-rae pressed her harshly, Geum-hoon said that he had received the letter from King Wonjong at a special request from King Sejo. Wonjong believed that Sambyeolcho would ignore it if it was his order, but that he would not be able to ignore it if Won Sejo, who had once compromised with Sambyeolcho, came forward himself.

 Dal-rae imprisoned Geum-hoon and his party on Chuja-do and delivered King Sejo's letter to Kim Tong-jeong in Jeju. Kim Tong-jeong read the letter and tore it up on the spot.

 “How can you trust the Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty? Even in the last Jindo, they reassured us but then stabbed us. If you fooled me once, will you fool me twice? If we see what they did, we will all have to kill them, but since we need to let them know our intentions, let one live and let him tell the King of Goryeo this. “Sambyeolcho can never reconcile as long as the Gaegyeong government sides with the Yuan Dynasty and persecutes the people.”

 So, Dal-lae took only Geum-hun in a small boat and sent an old boatman along. The ship wandered at sea for 20 days and finally arrived at Byeokrak Island.

 The next day, Geumhun met with Wonjong and told him surprising news.

 “Your Majesty, I am very sorry to inform you, but judging by the fact that Dal-rae’s group braved the storm to come to Seoul, it seems that they are targeting you directly.”

 “Who was Dallae?”

 “I am Hye-seong, the monk who rescued Kim Tong-jeong.”

 “Ah, these beautiful things!... By the way, you’re in big trouble.”

King Wonjong's face turned white and he urgently convened a meeting of the royal family.

 “Martial law is declared in the capital. Strengthen inspections on the roads leading to Gaegyeong, including Byeokran Island, and take full precautions at the palace perimeter.”

Then, he gave Geumhun an epitaph and sent it to King Sejo of the Yuan Dynasty.

 ‘Even though His Majesty the Emperor is giving us a chance to reform, our enemies are ignoring us. ‘Please send the Shang Dynasty’s army to eliminate the robbers.’

 King Sejo was also displeased with Sambyeolcho ignoring him. However, I was reluctant to step forward because I had suffered many failures before conquering Jindo. Before fighting Salbyeolcho, he wanted to finish the conquest of Japan.

 Hong Da-gu, who knew King Sejo's intentions well, made Goryeo's situation even more difficult.

 “The Yuan Dynasty drove Sambyeolcho to Jeju, which is farther than Jindo. Then, Goryeo should deal with the remaining remnants, and it is pathetic that they are trying to hand over the burden to Sang-guk. Now, Goryeo must first deal with the remnants of Sambyeolcho and then concentrate on conquering Japan according to the will of the Shang Dynasty.”

 King Sejo accepted Hong Da-gu's suggestion and put pressure on Goryeo to conquer Sambyeolcho.

 However, it was not easy to conquer Sambyeolcho with the power of the Gaegyeong government alone. On the contrary, the Goryeo naval forces were being oppressed by Sambyeolcho's naval forces and were shrinking further.
