Office of the President: "The Opposition Party's Blame for Exercising Veto Power and Unilaterally Pushing Through Unconstitutional and Illegal Bills"
Spokesperson Jeong Hye-jeon: "Is the intention to exploit the special prosecutor's hearing for party leader Bangtan Yong again? Aren't you afraid of being recorded as the Unconstitutional Party of Korea that submitted the most unconstitutional and illegal bills in history?"
-kihong Kim reporter
On the 2nd, the Blue House announced regarding President Yoon Seok-yeol's veto of the Twin Special Prosecutors Act (Mrs. Kim Gun-hee and Marine Corps members) and the Local Currency Act, "We clearly state that this exercise of the right to request reconsideration is the fault of the opposition party that unilaterally pushed through a bill full of unconstitutional and illegal elements."
At a briefing at the Blue House in Yongsan that afternoon, Blue House spokesperson Jeong Hye-jeon said, "According to the Constitution of the Republic of Korea, the president's request for reconsideration of unconstitutional and illegal bills is both a duty and a responsibility."
She then asked, "The current state of the opposition party is to continue to pass bills full of illegal elements," and "Is the intention to induce the exercise of the right to request reconsideration to count the number and exploit it again for the special prosecutor hearing for party leader Bangtan Yong?"
He also pointed out that “the opposition party has unilaterally processed a total of 24 evil laws so far,” and “the opposition party is trying to block the right to request reconsideration, which is a means to prevent the opposition party from running wild, through law, but it is also unconstitutional to infringe upon the power guaranteed by the Constitution through law.”
He continued, “It is against the principle of separation of powers because it restricts and changes the means of checks and balances stipulated in the Constitution to prevent abuse and misuse of the National Assembly’s power,” and repeatedly asked, “I want to ask the Democratic Party of Korea. Aren’t you afraid of being recorded as the Unconstitutional Party that proposed the most unconstitutional and illegal bills in history?”
An official from the presidential office met with reporters at the presidential office in Yongsan that afternoon and criticized the formation of the “Yoon Seok-yeol Impeachment Preparation Lawmakers’ Coalition” by some opposition party members, saying, “I hope the opposition party escapes the impeachment addiction swamp as soon as possible so that the Constitution of the Republic of Korea and liberal democracy can be properly established.”
He also pointed out that "some opposition party lawmakers are holding an impeachment concert and activating the Presidential Impeachment Preparation Lawmakers' Coalition, but it looks like a bulletproof concert, not an impeachment concert, and not a lawmakers' coalition for impeachment preparation, but a lawmakers' coalition for bulletproof preparation."
He then said, "They are not only calling in prosecutors and judges who are investigating opposition figures for a hearing and threatening to impeach them, but are also threatening to impeach the president, who is the guardian of the Constitution," and "I want to ask if it is really the right thing to do to impeach prosecutors and judges who are investigating the party leader in order to block the party leader's investigation."
He continued, "I don't think the people created the majority party to impeach the party leader," and repeatedly asked, "Isn't it true that the charges will disappear just because they create a wind of impeachment by spreading fake news and conspiracy theories?"
In addition, regarding the legislation of the 'distortion of law' that the opposition party is pushing for, he pointed out, "This is literally a trial of the president to protect Lee Jae-myung," and "This is a bill that will punish prosecutors for distorting the law, but who is to judge what is distortion? It can only be seen as an unconstitutional idea of using the majority party's power to threaten the prosecution and abuse legislative power to protect Lee Jae-myung."
In addition, while he did not express a separate position on the decision not to indict Mrs. Kim for the 'allegation of accepting luxury bags', he said, "We are listening to various opinions," and "We do not specifically state our position on the results of the prosecution's investigation."
Regarding the argument by some in the People's Power Party, including the 'Chinhan faction', that Mrs. Kim needs to apologize, he said, "There are reports that 'the weight is being placed on reviewing it,' but our position is that we are listening to various opinions," and "We are listening to various opinions, and I think we will be able to tell you as soon as they are organized."
Regarding the release of the transcript of the alleged intervention of Mrs. Kim in party affairs by an internet media outlet, he responded that it seemed like an absurd claim by former administrative officer of the Office of the Secretary for Civil Communication, Kim Dae-nam, who made the statement.
He added, “Former administrative officer Kim’s defense team has stated their position and he himself stated that his remarks were ‘absurd remarks’,” and “As he himself clearly stated, he has no contact with the First Lady and is merely a working-level employee of the Office of the President.”
He added, “These were remarks made after he retired from the Office of the President last October, and he himself said they were exaggerated and one-sided claims, and I understand that they are just one-sided claims.”
Meanwhile, regarding the Yongsan dinner that day inviting floor leader Choo Kyung-ho and other People Power Party floor leaders, standing committee chairs, and standing committee secretaries, he dismissed the interpretation that the fact that Representative Han Dong-hoon was not included as a ‘rejection of an exclusive meeting’ by saying, “It is (incorrect) to link it to today’s dinner, and this dinner is separate.”
Regarding the prospect of an exclusive interview in the future, he stated, "We will consider various factors before deciding on a request for an interview."
