16일 의성군에 따르면 스킵 김대현, 서드 이우정, 세컨 박성민, 리드 권준이, 얼터 신은준, 코치 김치구로 팀을 이룬 의성고등학교 컬링팀은 총 23개국이 출전한 2024 세계주니어컬링선수권B대회에서 예선 C조 6승 1패로 8강에 진출하여 스웨덴(4:2)과 일본(9:6)을 차례대로 꺾고 결승에 진출하여 스위스와 치열한 접전 끝에 4 : 3으로 우승을 차지했다.

이번 세계주니어컬링선수권B대회 우승으로 의성고등학교 컬링팀은 내년 4월 이탈리아에서 열릴 ‘2025 세계주니어컬링선수권대회’참가 자격을 획득했다.

올해 의성군청 남자 컬링팀은 2024~2025 국가대표 선발(2024. 6.), 2025 토리노동계세계대학경기대회 컬링 국가대표로 선발(2024. 9.)되었으며, 연이어 의성고등학교 컬링팀도 주니어 국가대표(2024. 10.)로 선발되어 컬링의 고장 의성의 위상을 드높였다.

의성고등학교 컬링팀 선수들은 “항상 전폭적인 지원을 아낌없이 해주신 김주수 군수님께 감사드리며 덕분에 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있었고 이 기세로 내년 2025 세계주니어컬링선수권대회에서도 우수한 성적을 거두도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

김주수 의성군수는 “의성고등학교 컬링팀의 우승으로 다시 한번 컬링의 메카 의성을 세계에 알릴 수 있는 계기가 되어 기쁘며 내년 2025 세계주니어컬링선수권대회에서도 좋은 성적을 거둘 수 있도록 아낌없는 지원을 하겠다”고 말했다.
