이 제도는 은퇴 후에도 전문가들이 최대 5년간 재고용되어 젊은 직원들에게 축적된 경험과 전문 지식을 효과적으로 전수할 수 있도록 설계됐다.

기술컨설턴트 지원자는 담당 임원의 추천을 받아 전문역량과 근무태도에 대한 심사를 통과해야 하며, 최종적으로 심의위원회에서 자격을 인정받는다. 이들은 일반 재채용자와 달리 '기술 전수'에 초점을 맞추며 매년 실적과 성과 평가를 통해 연봉수준, 계약 연장 여부가 결정된다.

올해 포항제철소에서는 EIC기술부의 이경재 명장, 박재열 차장, 설비기술부의 김영곤 과장이 새롭게 기술컨설턴트로 선발되었다. 2025년에는 광양제철소 3명의 신규 컨설턴트들을 포함해 총 16명의 기술컨설턴트가 후배 직원들에게 자신들의 축적된 역량을 전수할 계획이다.
