<에꼴> (Ecole) 그룹은 10여 년 전 홍익대학교 대학원에서 회화를 중심으로 작업을 하던 작가들이 모여 만들어진 화가들의 단체이다. 지금은 그 조건과 문호를 열어두어 홍익대 출신에 그치지 않고 많은 작가가 참여하여 매년 정기적인 그룹전을 해왔다. 특히 <서울 아트쇼>에서 개인 혹은 그룹으로 발표를 해왔다. 전시 성격이 불분명한 그런 단체들에 비하여 <에꼴>은 아주 자유롭고 개인의 작품 세계를 존중하면서 모임을 이끌어온 것이다.
발표전도도 국내에 머무르지 않고, 프랑스 파리에 그룹전을 비롯하여 중국의 상하이의 문화원까지 국내외 아트페어에 참석하였다. 에꼴이 국내에 머물지 않고 국제적으로 주목할 만한 작가들의 단체로 비상하기 위한 노력 들이었다.

이번 오미 갤러리의 27명의 <에꼴> 정기전시도 갤러리의 아낌없는 후원과 협조로 이루어진 전시이다.
그룹 내 개인 작업의 성격들을 독특하게 살려내면서 에꼴<ecole> 이라는 <학교>라는 프랑스어의 성격을 잘 갖춰 개최된 것이다.
여기에는 30대에서 60대까지 치열하게 나이를 뛰어넘어 자기 작품 세계를 해나가는 작가들이 포함되어 있어 성장하는 유익한 미술 단체로 초대를 받기도 했다.
작품 활동도 자유로운 회화 단체이지만, 1년에 한두 번씩 워크숍이나 세미나 같은 것을 통하여 작가들의 작품 세계를 다지고 친목을 도모하고 모임을 이끌어 온 것도 특징적이다. 그러나 이번 전시는 조금 더 색다른 이슈를 가지고 있는 에꼴 전시이다.

특히 이 모임 중에서는 홍익대 미술대학원을 졸업한 정세훈 작가가 오랫동안 회장직을 역임하면서 에꼴 모임에 크게 이바지하였는데, 부득이하게 우리와 함께하지 못하고 가슴 아픈 이별을 하였다.
어려운 미술 모임을 씩씩하게, 그리고 모든 정성과 후원을 아끼지 않으면서 지금까지 10년 이상 함께 해온 정세훈 작가의 작품으로 대신한다는 것이다.
그래서 에꼴 작가들이 마음을 모아 정세훈 작가의 작품과 함께 전시하면서 그를 추억하고 아름답게 기억하기 위한 전시가 그 회원들의 정성이 함께한 전시인 것이다.
화가 정세훈은 인간적으로나 작가로서 독창적인 자신의 세계를 통해서 의미 있는 조형 작품 세계를 구축한 보기 드문 현장의 작가이기도 했다.
예술가가 자기의 작품 세계를 하나의 경향으로 구축한다는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다.
그러나 정세훈 작가는 그 반구상적인 작품 세계를 구축해서 끝까지 정세훈만의 화풍을 구축한 우리가 기억해 두어야 할 만한 예술가의 표상이었다.
여기에는 우리가 볼 수 없었던 또 미공개 정세훈 작가의 작품들을 함께 감상하는 소중한 뜻도 함께한 것이 기회가 이번 전시의 취지이기도 하다.

무엇보다 좀 더 오래 함께 우리와 활동을 하고 좋은 작품들을 보여주었으면 하는 가슴 아픈 것이 솔직히 심정이 너무너무 크다. 그러나 일찍 우리와 이별을 하여 안타까움과 아쉬움이 너무 크다. 무엇보다 많은 <에꼴> 회원들이 이 전시를 통하여 정세훈 작가를 다시한번 기억하고, 그와 보냈던 아름다운 시간을 되돌아보면서 작품을 기억하는 시간이 되었으면 더없이 행복할 것 같다.
많은 작가들이 그를 기억하고, 그의 작품들을 앞에 두고 다시한번 에꼴의 세계를 이야기할 수 있어서 참으로 오늘은 행복하고 감사하다.
어려운 가운데도 모든 회원이 이러한 따뜻한 정성과 마음을 가지고 있어서 무엇보다 정세훈 작가도 기뻐할 것이다. 그뿐만 아니라 인연을 가졌던 나로서는 더더욱 감사하고 기쁘다. 이 아름다운 시간과 추억, 그 마음을 잊지 않고 오랫동안 기억하고 싶다.

다시 한번 따뜻한 시간과 정성을 모아 만들어진 이 전시가 정세훈 작가에게 아름다운 이별을 더 오랫동안 가슴속에 공유할 수 있는 그런 소중한 전시와 추억이 되었으면 더 이상의 바람은 없다.

Now, the conditions and doors have been open, and many artists, not just those from Hongik University, have participated in regular group exhibitions every year. In particular, they have presented their works as individuals or as a group at the <Seoul Art Show>. Compared to groups with unclear exhibition characteristics, <Ecole> has led the group very freely and respects the world of individual works.
Their presentations did not stop at Korea, but participated in domestic and international art fairs, including a group exhibition in Paris, France and a cultural center in Shanghai, China. These were efforts for Ecole to rise as a group of artists who are not only domestic but also noteworthy internationally.
This regular exhibition of 27 <Ecole> artists at Omi Gallery was also made possible with the gallery’s generous support and cooperation. I am truly happy and grateful today that many artists remember him and can talk about the world of Ecole once again with his works in front of them. Artist Jeong Se-hoon would be happy more than anything because all members have such warm sincerity and heart even in difficult times. Moreover, I am even more grateful and happy as someone who had a relationship with him. I want to remember this beautiful time, memories, and heart for a long time without forgetting them.
I hope that this exhibition, which was created with warm time and sincerity, will become a precious exhibition and memory for artist Jeong Se-hoon that will allow him to share the beautiful farewell in his heart for a long time.
