이성아 작가의 소설 “밤이여 오라”. 소설 속 주인공 변이숙이 독일로  유학을 떠나겠다고 하자 어머니는 부엌에서 비닐 봉지 하나를 가져온다. 그 안에 신문지로 몇 번을 싸고 또 싼 돈이 들어있다. 어머니가 말한다.

"나는 배우지 못해서 말을 못하고 살았다. 억울하고 분해도 어디 가서 누구한테 따져야 되는지도 모르고 살았다. 나는 아버지가 죽었다는데, 어디에서  어떻게 왜 죽었는지 몰랐다. 누가 아버지 사망신고를 한 건지도 몰랐다."

변이숙은 그런 엄마를 둔 제주 4-3의 후손이다.

독일에 간 변이숙은 거기서 대학 선배인 현기표를 만난다. 변이숙은 기표의 약혼녀인 연주와도 아는 사이다. 기표는 서울에 가서 연주와 파혼하고 오겠다며 귀국한다. 그러나 기표는 독일로 돌아오지 않는다. 알고 보니 안기부에 잡혀있다는 것이다.

상황을 알고 싶어 변이숙도 서울로 오지만 공항에서 기관원에게 끌려간다. 문민정부 시절임에도 기표는 북한에 다녀왔다는 죄를 뒤집어쓰고, 변이숙은 그런 사실을 증언하도록 강요받는다. 변이숙은 참고인 신분이었다가 끝내는 피의자로 둔갑한다. 결국 변이숙은 3년, 현기표는 4년6월의 실형을 산다. 독일에 있던 안기부 프락치가 수를 부린 결과다.

변이숙은 크로아티아 출신 소설가 마르코의 독일어 소설을 한글로 번역한다. 변이숙은 마르코와 함께 발칸반도 여러 곳에서 개최된 북 토크 등에 참석한다. 변이숙은 여기나 저기나 전쟁과 국가폭력이 도긴개긴한 도플갱어임을 실감한다.

현기표가 감옥에서 나온다. 민주화에 진전이 있어 기표의 애인 연주가 현기표의 재심을 추진한다. 그러나 기표는 간 절제수술을 받은 뒤 부정맥이 나타나 숨지고 만다. 변이숙은 기표의 재가 있는 추모관을 찾는다. 재심 신청을 내켜하지 않던 변이숙은 마음을 돌려 자신도 재심을 받기로 하고, 가고 싶지 않지만 가야만 하는 곳, 제주로 향한다.

이성아 작가는 이 소설《밤이여 오라》로 2021년에 4-3문학상을 받았다. 문장도 유려하지만, 문학 기술적으로도 본받을 바가 많다. 소설 쓰기를 체계적으로 배워보지 못한 나 같은 아마추어로서는 교본처럼 음미하며 읽어야 할 작품이다. 왠지 김이정 작가의 소설과 서사형식에서 닮은 데가 있다고 느꼈는데, 알고 보니 두 작가는 고 송기원 선생한테 동문수학했다고 한다. 두 작가에게서 앞으로 훨씬 더 큰 소설이 나오리라고 확신한다.

When Byun Yi-sook says she will go study abroad in Germany, her mother brings a plastic bag from the kitchen. Inside is money that has been wrapped several times in newspaper and wrapped again. Her mother says,

"I lived without being able to speak because I couldn't learn. I lived with injustice and anger, not knowing where to go and who to confront. I didn't know where, how, or why my father died. I didn't even know who reported his death."

Byun Yi-sook is a descendant of the Jeju 4-3 Incident, who has such a mother.

Byun Yi-sook goes to Germany and meets Hyun Gi-pyo, her college senior. Byun Yi-sook also knows Gi-pyo's fiancée Yeon-ju. Gi-pyo returns to Korea, saying he will go to Seoul and break off the engagement with Yeon-ju. However, Gi-pyo does not return to Germany. It turns out that he is being held by the National Intelligence Service.

Byun Yi-sook also comes to Seoul to find out the situation, but is taken away by the agency at the airport. Even though it was during the civilian government, Ki-pyo is accused of having visited North Korea, and Byun Yi-sook is forced to testify about it. Byun Yi-sook was a witness, but eventually turned into a suspect. In the end, Byun Yi-sook is sentenced to three years in prison, and Hyun Ki-pyo is sentenced to four years and six months. This is the result of the National Intelligence Service spy in Germany.

Byun Yi-sook translates a German novel by Croatian novelist Marco into Korean. Byun Yi-sook and Marco attend book talks held in various places in the Balkan Peninsula. Byun Yi-sook realizes that war and state violence are doppelgangers everywhere.

Hyun Ki-pyo is released from prison. As democratization progresses, Ki-pyo's lover Yeon-ju pushes for a retrial for Hyun Ki-pyo. However, Ki-pyo suffers from an arrhythmia after undergoing liver surgery and dies. Byun Yi-sook visits the memorial hall where Ki-pyo's ashes are. Byun Yi-sook, who had been reluctant to apply for a retrial, changes her mind and decides to undergo a retrial herself, and heads to Jeju, a place she does not want to go but must go to.

Lee Seong-ah won the 4-3 Literary Award in 2021 for this novel, Come Night. Not only is the sentences elegant, but there is also much to learn from the literary techniques. For an amateur like me who has not systematically learned how to write novels, this is a work that should be read and savored like a textbook. I felt that there were some similarities between Kim Yi-jeong's novel and the narrative format, and it turned out that the two authors were classmates under the late Song Ki-won. I am certain that the two authors will produce much greater novels in the future.
