조기주 서양화가( 단국대학교 명예교수)가 세종문화회관 한글갤러리에서 4월22일부터 5월18일까지 "포용: Embrace the Stains of Life"을 주제로한, 개인전을 개최한다.
세종문화회관 세종이야기 한글 갤러리는 보도자료에서 “조기주의 개인전 『포용: Embrace the Stains of Life』은 작품집 출간과 더불어 열린다. 조기주 작품집 『포용: Embrace the Stains of Life』은 서울문화재단 작품집 후원에 선정되어 출간된 320p 하드커버로 조기주 작가의 1979년부터 현재까지의 작품은 물론 비평가들의 글, 아카이브 까지 총망라한 국-영문판 아트북이다. 조기주 작품집 발간과 함께 같은 제목의 개인전 『포용: Embrace the Stains of Life』을 가진다”고 설명하고 “조기주는 무겁고 거칠다고 느껴지는 시멘트를 여성 연금술사다운 터치를 넣어서 부담 없이 접근할 수 있는 친근하고 따뜻한 예술작품으로 탄생시키는 작가”라고 소개했다.
보도자료에 따르면, 김찬동 (나주시 문화재단 대표이사/전 아르코 미술관장)은 <조기주의 우주와 생명, 여성의 연금술의 세계>에서 “조기주의 작업은 자신만의 독특한 언어를 찾아가는 여정이었다. 2014년 이후 지속해오고 있는 <Stained Cement>에서는 이러한 그녀의 사유가 집중되어 있다. 하지만 그 사유가 관념화되어 경직되었다기보다는 여전히 자유로움을 얻기 위해 열려있다는 점을 기억해야 한다.”면서 “인간의 물질문명을 상징하는 거칠고 삭막한 시멘트 콘크리트에서 삶의 흔적을 찾아내어 이를 조형화하는 시각 역시 독특하다. 처음엔 벽지를 뜯어낸 뒤 남은 얼룩과 흔적들로 인해, 후엔 도심 재개발로 드러난 건물의 잔해 속에서 삶의 흔적들과의 조우를 계기로 시작된 것이지만 점차 콘크리트에 조형적으로 새로운 생기를 불어넣는 다양한 조형 실험과 그녀가 체득한 제의적 절차를 통해 매체를 수용하는 연금술적 기법이 이를 가능케 했다.” 라고 강조했다.
조기주 작가는 이번 개인전 『포용: Embrace the Stains of Life』에서 아래-새로운 작품들을 선보인다.

1. 입구 쪽 코너에 최초로 발표되는 2018년부터 계속했던 재개발 현장에서 가지고 온 Found Concrete 작품들의 설치로 세월과 얼룩에 대한 찬미를 시각화

*조기주 화가는 어떤 작가인가?
조기주 작가는 서울에서 태어나 이화여대 서양화과를 거쳐 미국 프랫 인스티튜트에서 회화 전공, 미술사 부전공으로 석사학위를 받았다. 1981년 뉴욕 브루클린 히긴스홀 갤러리, 1982년 서울 미국문화원 전시실에서 개최한 개인전을 시작으로 세종문화회관, 갤러리 인데코, 브레인팩토리, 금호미술관, Gallerie 89 Paris, 갤러리 오, 보혜미안 갤러리, 강남구 미디어갤러리 등 서울뿐 아니라 파리, 상해, 뉴욕 등지에서 40회의 개인전을 가졌다. 평면 회화(1981~현재), 설치(1995, 2005, 2010~2011,2025)뿐 아니라 영상 및 미디어아트 (1999~2024)와 단편영화(2006), 애니메이션(2007, 2014~2019) 등 다양하고 폭넓은 작품 세계를 추구해 왔다.
소마미술관 드로잉센터 아카이브 작가(2024), 서울문화재단 작품집 발간(2023)에 선정 되었으며 대한민국 근정 포상(2020)을 수여 받았고, 전남 국제수묵비엔날레, 화화사유(畵話思惟), 서울시립미술관 SeMA Collection Showcase , KIAF 2015, 파리 그랑빨레 드로잉 초대전 등 200여 회 그룹전에 참여했다.
조기주 작가는 물질에 대한 많은 실험은 물론, 인문학과 자연과학 그리고 여러 미술 담론을 탐구하며, 예술적 실천으로서의 저서로 『이것도 예술이야?』(2004, 현암사), 『이유 있는 미술 시간』(2016, 노스보스) 및 조기주 작품집 『포용:Embrace the Stains of Life』(2025, K Artbook) 이 있다. 단국대학교 예술대학 학장을 역임하였고 현재는 전업작가로 활동 중이다.

Jo Gi-ju (Western Painter, Professor Emeritus, Dankook University) will hold a solo exhibition with the theme of "Embrace: Embrace the Stains of Life" at Hangul Gallery, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts from April 22 to May 18.
Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Sejong Story Hangul Gallery explained in a press release, “Jo Ki-ju’s solo exhibition, Embrace: Embrace the Stains of Life, will be held along with the publication of her collection of works. Jo Ki-ju’s collection of works, Embrace: Embrace the Stains of Life, is a 320-page hardcover art book published under the sponsorship of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, which includes Jo Ki-ju’s works from 1979 to the present as well as writings by critics and archives. Along with the publication of Jo Ki-ju’s collection of works, we will be holding a solo exhibition of the same title, Embrace: Embrace the Stains of Life.” They also introduced Jo Ki-ju as an artist who “creates cement, which is perceived as heavy and rough, into friendly and warm artworks that can be approached without burden by adding a touch of a female alchemist.” According to a press release, Kim Chan-dong (CEO of Naju City Cultural Foundation/Former Director of Arko Art Museum) emphasized in <Jogiju’s Universe and Life, the World of Women’s Alchemy> that “Jogiju’s work was a journey to find her own unique language. Her thoughts are concentrated in <Stained Cement>, which has been ongoing since 2014. 4. The theme of the works will be expressed in Korean on the nine thick pillars located at the front, injecting vitality into the space.

*What kind of artist is Jo Gi-ju?
Jo Gi-ju was born in Seoul, graduated from Ewha Womans University's Department of Western Painting, and received her master's degree in painting and minor in art history from Pratt Institute in the United States. Starting with her solo exhibition held at the Higgins Hall Gallery in Brooklyn, New York in 1981 and the exhibition hall of the American Cultural Center in Seoul in 1982, she has held 40 solo exhibitions in Seoul as well as in Paris, Shanghai, and New York, including at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Gallery Indeco, Brain Factory, Kumho Museum of Art, Gallerie 89 Paris, Gallery O, Bohyemian Gallery, and Gangnam-gu Media Gallery. He has pursued a diverse and wide-ranging world of works including flat paintings (1981-present), installations (1995, 2005, 2010-2011, 2025), as well as video and media art (1999-2024), short films (2006), and animations (2007, 2014-2019). In addition, he was selected as an archive artist for the Soma Museum of Art Drawing Center (2024), published a collection of works by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture (2023), and received the Republic of Korea Award for Public Service (2020). He has participated in over 200 group exhibitions, including the Jeonnam International Sumik Biennale, Hwahwasayu (畵話思惟), the Seoul Museum of Art SeMA Collection Showcase, KIAF 2015, and the Paris Grand Palais Drawing Invitational. Artist Cho Ki-ju not only conducts many experiments with materials, but also explores humanities, natural science, and various art discourses. As an artistic practice, he has written books such as Is This Art, Too?
