한수원은 현지시간 10일, 태국 논타부리에서 EGAT와 SMR 분야 상호 협력을 위한 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다고 11일 밝혔다.

이번 협약을 통해 양 기관은 ▲SMR 관련 기술정보 교류 ▲태국 맞춤형 SMR 도입 가능성 공동 검토 ▲현장 견학 및 교육훈련 프로그램 등 인력 양성 ▲실무협의체(Working Group)를 통한 원자력 분야 연구개발(R&D) 협력 및 인적·기술 교류 등 다양한 실질적 협력방안을 추진할 계획이다.

EGAT는 현재 태국 전력 생산량의 약 30%를 공급하고 있으며, 자국의 2050 탄소중립 목표 실현과 에너지믹스 다변화를 위해 원자력 등 저탄소 에너지원 확대를 적극 모색 중이다. 이번 협약은 태국 내 원자력 평화적 이용 기반을 공고히 하고, SMR을 통한 탈탄소 전환 가능성을 구체화하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.

EGAT의 티데이 이암사이(Thidade Eiamsai) 부총재는 “SMR은 에너지 안보와 탄소중립을 동시에 달성할 수 있는 미래형 기술”이라며, “세계 최고 수준의 원전 운영 경험과 기술력을 갖춘 한수원과의 협력은 EGAT의 전력 전환 전략에 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

한수원 박인식 수출사업본부장은 “이번 협약은 한수원이 태국의 에너지 전환 파트너로서 기술력을 공유하는 첫걸음”이라며, “향후 EGAT와 긴밀한 협력을 통해 태국의 지속가능한 에너지 체계 구축을 지원하고, 이를 발판 삼아 ASEAN SMR 시장 진출을 본격화해 글로벌 에너지 전환을 주도하는 협력 모델을 만들어갈 것”이라고 밝혔다.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Hwang Joo-ho, hereinafter referred to as KHNP) is joining hands with Thailand’s state-run power utility, Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to begin full-scale cooperation in the small modular reactor (SMR) sector.

KHNP announced on the 11th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with EGAT for mutual cooperation in the SMR sector in Nonthaburi, Thailand on the 10th (local time).

Through this agreement, the two organizations plan to pursue various practical cooperation measures, including ▲exchange of SMR-related technical information ▲joint review of the possibility of introducing customized SMRs in Thailand ▲human resource development through on-site tours and education and training programs ▲cooperation in nuclear power research and development (R&D) and personnel and technology exchanges through a working group.

EGAT currently supplies about 30% of Thailand’s electricity production and is actively seeking to expand low-carbon energy sources such as nuclear power to achieve the country’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal and diversify its energy mix. This agreement is expected to solidify the foundation for peaceful use of nuclear power in Thailand and serve as an opportunity to concretize the possibility of a decarbonization transition through SMR.

EGAT Vice President Thidade Eiamsai said, “SMR is a future technology that can achieve energy security and carbon neutrality at the same time,” and added, “The cooperation with KHNP, which has world-class nuclear power plant operation experience and technology, will be of great help to EGAT’s power transition strategy.”

Park In-sik, head of the Export Business Division at Hanwha Solutions, said, “This agreement is the first step for Hanwha Solutions to share its technological prowess as Thailand’s energy transition partner,” adding, “We will work closely with EGAT in the future to support the establishment of a sustainable energy system in Thailand and, using this as a stepping stone, to fully advance into the ASEAN SMR market and create a cooperation model that drives the global energy transition.”
