특히 동대구역 광장에 설치된 박정희 동상은 설치 과정부터 논란이 많았다. 시민 의견을 수렴하지 않고 추진된 데다, 야간 불침번 근무와 CCTV 설치, 관련 소송까지 불거지며 오히려 '기념사업의 실패'라는 비판이 뒤따랐다. 일각에서는 동상의 외형이 당시 홍준표 시장을 닮았다는 지적도 나왔다.
