지금 국민의힘은 기로(岐路)에 서 있다. 지도자는 없고, 철학은 사라졌으며, 전략은 실종됐다. 민심은 등을 돌렸고, 당원들은 침묵 속에서 허탈한 표정을 짓는다. 여의도는 ‘누가 더 덜 미운가’를 경쟁하는 장소가 되었다.

지난 30년, 우리 보수정당은 기회 있을 때마다 외부 인물을 수입해 지도자로 추대해왔다. 최고위 판사 이회창, 최고위 검사 윤석열, 그리고 제대로 된 권력을 맛보지도 못하고 정치권 미아로 전락한 국무총리 황교안, 유엔 사무총장 반기문, 국무총리 한덕수까지. 하나같이 스펙은 화려했다. 아니, 화려하기만 했다. 이들의 공통점은 실로 뚜렷하다. 14세기 조선의 과거시험, 곧 사법·행정·외무 고시를 통과한 것을 21세기까지 무용담처럼 들고 다니는 가똑똑이들이었다. 외양은 근대인데 내장은 여전히 성리학적 세계관에 갇힌 선비형 인간들이다. 현실 정치의 피비린내와 권력의 역학은 애초에 접점조차 없었다. 임명직의 온실에서 자란 이들은 야성이라곤 찾아볼 수 없었고, 정치의 본질은커녕 권력의 냉혹함도 감당하지 못했다. 민심이란 말은 회의실 보고서에서나 접했을 뿐, 삶의 언저리에서 부딪쳐본 적이 없다. IQ는 높았지만, PQ(정치지능)와 SQ(사회감각)는 거의 장애에 가까웠다. 결정적일 때는 침묵했고, 책임질 땐 자리를 비웠으며, 전략이라는 단어 앞에서는 고개를 숙였다. 위기 속에서 결단 대신 눈치만 보았고, 정치가 무엇인지 끝내 이해하지 못한 채 퇴장했다.

정치는 단순한 이력서가 아니다. 화려한 직함 몇 줄로 되는 게 아니다. 그것은 시대정신을 꿰뚫는 통찰에서 출발해야 하며, 전략적 사고를 바탕으로 한 고도의 정무적 판단이 필요하고, 무엇보다 국민의 눈높이에서 민심의 흐름을 읽어낼 수 있는 감각이 전제되어야 한다. 대관의 기개는 없고, 소찰의 안목만으로 정치를 해석했던 이들은 결국 우리 당을 황폐화시켰다. 외부에서 수입한 인물들은 당의 전통을 이해하지 못했고, 조직과의 화학적 결합도 이루지 못했다. 그들에겐 보수를 지탱해온 가치에 대한 이해도, 당원과 함께 걸어온 시간도 없었다. 당내 자산은 철저히 외면당했고, 우리의 철학은 임시로 임대되었으며, 당심과 민심은 갈라졌다. 이제는 물어야 한다. 왜 우리는 매번 스스로를 부정하면서, 외부의 허울 좋은 스펙에 기대는가? 왜 당이 키운 사람에게, 당을 맡기지 못하는가?

○ 김문수(국민의힘 전 대통령 후보), 왜 지금이어야 하는가?

1. 김문수는 언행일치의 상징, 청렴한 정치인의 표본이다.

김문수는 단 한 번도 권력에 아부하지 않았고, 한 번도 이념을 저버리지 않았다. 보수 정치에서 가장 결핍된 것이 진정성이라면, 김문수는 바로 그 진정성의 화신이다. 권력욕으로 움직이지 않았기에 그는 자유롭고, 어떤 권력에도 종속되지 않았기에 그는 담대하다. 노동운동가를 거쳐 국회의원 3선, 경기지사 2선, 노동부 장관 출신이라는 독특한 이력은 그가 보수의 품격과 진보의 투지를 함께 이해하는 정치인임을 증명한다. 김문수만큼 청렴하고 자기 검열에 엄격했던 정치인이 몇이나 되는가.

민주당의 이재명을 중심으로 한 좌파 운동권 연합은 조직력, 프레임 전환, 민생 어젠다 장악 능력에서 압도적이다. 이에 비해 국민의힘 내부를 들여다보면, 정치적 노련함과 통찰을 갖춘 ‘고수 정치인’은 보이지 않고, 국회의원의 절대다수는 실질적인 역할을 하지 못하는 ‘식물 정치인’으로 전락한 지 오래다. 이렇듯 전력의 불균형이 심각한 상황에서, 적어도 당대표만이라도 운동권의 언어를 이해하고 해체할 수 있는 전략가가 필요하지 않겠는가. 김문수는 누구보다 운동권의 조직 메커니즘과 프레임 전술을 꿰뚫고 있다. 그는 그들보다 더 뜨거운 경험과 더 강한 논리를 가진 유일한 보수 정치인이다. 운동권 출신에서 보수 지도자가 된 그의 궤적 자체가 좌파를 무너뜨릴 가장 강력한 해독제다.

5. 실천적 기독교 신앙과 도덕정치의 본보기다.
