기독교복음선교회 교인협의회는 10월3일치 보도자료를 통해 “유튜브 채널 ‘매불쇼’의 최근 방송과 관련해 “사실을 왜곡하고 명예를 훼손했다”고 주장했다. 이 교단의 교인협의회는 2일 오전 10시 서울시에 소재한 ‘매불쇼’ 사옥 앞에서 20여 명의 교인들이 모인 가운데 집회를 열고, ‘매불쇼’ 측에 반론 방송 기회 제공과 팩트 체크를 거친 공정한 방송을 촉구했다.

곽동원 교인협의회 회장은 이날 발표한 입장문을 통해 “’매불쇼’가 본 선교회 창립자 정명석 목사에 대해 사실 확인 없이 치명적인 욕설과 왜곡된 내용을 방송해 교인들에게 씻을 수 없는 모욕감과 정신적 피해를 안겼다”면서 “공익을 내세운 선정적이고 자극적인 콘텐츠로 종교의 자유를 침해했다”고 강조했다.

곽동원 회장은 이어 “방송법 규제를 받지 않는 OTT 플랫폼과 유튜브 채널의 영향력이 커지면서 시청률과 조회수가 수익으로 연결되는 구조 속에서 사실보다 화제성이 우선되고 있다”면서 “넷플릭스 나는 신이다 후속편 나는 생존자다가 기대만큼 관심을 끌지 못하자, 제작 PD와 관련 인사가 ‘매불쇼’에서 악의적인 홍보에 나섰다”고 지적했다.

교인협의회는 정명석 목사 관련 재판에 대해서도 불공정성을 제기했다. 곽동원 회장은 “정명석 목사는 충분한 방어권을 보장받지 못했고, 언론에 의한 마녀사냥식 여론몰이로 재판이 왜곡됐다”고 주장하면서 “사건의 핵심 증거였던 녹취 파일은 다수의 공신력 있는 전문 감정기관에서 편집·조작된 사실이 드러났고, 항소심에서는 증거로 채택되지 않았다”고 피력했다. 그는 또 “항소심 과정에서 거액을 노린 기획 고소 정황과 새로운 증거가 제시됐음에도 재판부는 충분한 심리 없이 서둘러 판결을 내렸다”며 “일부 인사는 판사 신상을 공개하겠다고 협박하는 등 법관의 독립성을 침해하는 행위도 있었다”고 덧붙였다.

이 교단의 교인협의회는 이번 사태와 관련해 “정 목사와 교인들의 명예가 크게 실추됐다”며 “매불쇼 측이 사실에 근거한 자료를 바탕으로 진심 어린 사과와 공정한 반론 보도를 하지 않는다면 가능한 모든 법적 수단을 동원해 강력히 대응 하겠다”고 밝혔다.

The Christian Gospel Mission Church Members' Council, in a press release dated October 3, asserted that the YouTube channel "Maebul Show" had "distorted facts and defamed" the church in a recent broadcast. Around 20 church members held a rally in front of the "Maebul Show" building in Seoul at 10:00 AM on October 2nd, urging the church to provide a rebuttal and to provide a fair, fact-checked broadcast.

In a statement released that day, Council President Kwak Dong-won stated, "'Maebul Show' broadcasted damaging insults and distorted content about the church's founder, Pastor Jeong Myeong-seok, without verifying the facts, causing irreparable insult and psychological harm to the church members." He added, "This is a violation of the public interest." He emphasized, "The sensational and provocative content promoted by the media has violated religious freedom."

Chairman Kwak Dong-won continued, "With the growing influence of OTT platforms and YouTube channels, which are not subject to broadcasting law regulations, viewership and views are now linked to revenue, prioritizing topicality over factual content." He added, "When the Netflix sequel I Am God, I Am a Survivor, failed to garner the expected attention, the production producer and related personnel engaged in malicious promotion on 'Maebul Show.'"

The Christian Council also raised concerns about the unfairness of the trial involving Pastor Jeong Myung-seok. Chairman Kwak asserted, "Pastor Jeong Myung-seok was not guaranteed adequate defense rights, and the trial was distorted by a witch-hunt-style public opinion manipulation by the media." He added, "The recording file, which was key evidence in the case, was revealed to have been edited and manipulated by multiple credible expert review agencies, and was not accepted as evidence in the appeals trial."
